and it backs militias that oppose Israel. It has supplied drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war.

The likely, yet unstated, goal of this war is to balkanize Iran into smaller countries, each with a mix of factions, eg the way the UK did other countries in that region such as Iraq after WW1. The belief is that this will make the region more manageable in the long run.
