Including hands on. In my husband’s case he has built his own lab of sorts at home and tests out database upgrades, DR, automation, etc. He is “the guy” they put to figure out problems people on his team with far more formal education can’t figure out. There is simply no substitute for education reached by hands on.

I was responding more to the part of your post about Si Valley dropouts like Steve Jobs..most of those guys are a menace to society and their hyperlibertarian, anti environmental, essentially anti-intellectual bent has embittered me, with all the shit breaking..
