1. Last Friday, 3 days ago, was triple witching - options expiration of 3 varieties.

These can be volatile, but I did notice that bargain hunters were very late at the end of day. Usually begins around 3:35 but Friday was a good 3:50 and later, and they were snapping up long positions. So I think somebody had a clue as to what was going down. Today, those positions paid off. Now they go short again this week. They must be raking it in.
