that some of those he oppresses have a lot to lose. It seems to me that the ones who do push back tend to be those who either don't have so much to lose (e.g., they don't depend heavily on government funding for their work) or that stand to lose everything if they don't push back.

All of that said, I think the current situation is a great example of when compliance and appeasement may see best in the short run but ultimately make things much, much worse.

I am very grateful for those who do push back, and I don't mean to undervalue what it costs them.
