So I googled it, and I found this interesting interview, and learned how they managed to turn our country into a shoot-out:

Winkler reveals exactly how the NRA went from supporting strict gun control to actively fighting to undo gun laws in the U.S. “The NRA changed literally overnight. Leaders of the NRA were planning on retreating from political lobbying in the early 1970s and moving the cooperate headquarters to Colorado Springs to focus on outdoors activities and hunting,” Winkler says. “And this angered a group of hardliners within the membership who thought guns are not about killing ducks, they’re about self-defense in a time of rising crime rates, which was the early 1970s. And they staged a coup.”
