He has not experienced anything like a typical life. Not to know what a corner store is means he has no experience of life n a typical city neighborhood.

Many of the corner stores that used to exist are closed now, but in some cities, they remain the heart of commerce in people's real lives. In suburban America, they have been replaced by the convenience stores at gas stations, though.

In the cordoned-off high end residential areas, the corner store neve existed. People had servants to do the shopping.
