I've seen such people in academia - they figure out what the consensus is on an issue, and then take the opposite view for attention. Money is sometimes involved, but it doesn't have to be.

(This is different from crackpottery. Crackpots believe what they say. Contrarians might not.)

I thus expect him to start saying things that run counter to Republican orthodoxy. It's in his nature to do so.
