Not all adopt the nasty "tough guy" attitude that masks sadism rather than mere machismo in combat. Plenty of WWII veterans who saw the absolute "worst" of the "worst" came back with the most incredible empathy and kindness toward children, their neighbors, and both men AND women. That was also true with civilian populations in combat. Not the Hegseth stereotype, but the very opposite.
It appears he may be like the latter, rather than Hegseth type. One can only hope...
