No, you don't necessarily need a vet for treatment, but again, you need someone who can rope the steer, get it to the ground, hold it for treatment, etc. The smaller operations may not have a chute available as those are quite expensive. Even the cheap ones run about $3,500, and even with a chute, you still need someone who knows what to do, etc.
Now that a second case has been confirmed, I expect the authorities will be upping their patrols on roads and will be watching for trailers, etc.
Brooke Rollins firmly stated two days ago that the flies stay with the animals and don't "fly off on their own". That is patently false as the flies can easily get caught up in the winds of the thunderstorms that south Texas has been experiencing the last month, and in particular, the last week. The storms originate in Mexico and typically travel right through those three counties onward to the South East.
