That is the only way to get recognized by colleges, at least in the SF bay area. If you aren't on a strong club team they aren't interested in you.
That excludes a big percentage of the youth population. The same population that provides a majority of top players world wide.
The US system is different from the European system where teams run academies for players starting at an early age.
