but now that I've thought about it and how snotty and arrogant your comments were, I've changed my mind. I'll post one more time, and then that will be it.
You have a curious set of priorities. A teenage girl likely was knocked out and raped repeatedly, and she will never find out who all the thugs were who did this to her. If the accusations are true, she will have to live with this for the rest of her life, perhaps experience flashbacks. She could possibly commit suicide. No doubt she will be raped again in the courtroom by sleazy defense attorneys. In fact, I suspect there will not be any conviction. (After all, all the defense attorney has to do is pack the jury full of football fans.) Yet where have you chosen to direct your anger? You're more mad at me for my comments, in fact, than you are over what may have happened to this girl! That's a wonderfully warped set of priorities you've got there. In fact, you are more concerned about the image of football players than you are about victims of rape when the perps have been jocks! Absolutely pathetic!
You talk about those with power. Well, guess what? They happen to be FANS. All the townspeople who wanted this scandal to be swept under the rug are FANS. The vicious punks in the video are FANS. Yet you gripe at me for my observations about fans. I stand by my comments. They're based upon personal observations over decades. Your snotty little comments aren't going to intimidate me. I gave you specific instances of how sick the "jock culture" is, yet you have conveniently ignored them.
Do you honestly believe that if the two (well, there seems to have been a lot more than two) perps had been members of, say, the Chess Club, they would have been treated the same way? No, there would have been no coverup; and they definitely would have been prosecuted. The perps were protected precisely because they were football players; but since you're a sports fan, that doesn't bother you. You don't consider that to be an injustice.
I never did say all bullies were jocks or all jocks were bullies. That's nonsense. Those were words you put in my mouth.
I appreciate investigative reporting. My sister once did investigative reporting as a newspaper reporter under difficult circumstances. She upset big money people with her reporting. The sports media is nothing but a propaganda mill. I'd never consider them to be a journalistic institution. They're more in the realm of Joseph Goebbels. They will get upset if, say, a professional baseball player has abused steroids; but that's just because the use of steroids affects the outcome of games. Committing gang rape doesn't affect playing ability or the outcome of a game; so, it's not so objectionable to the sports columnists. Besides, they've got to uphold that phony "hero" image and not upset the fans. The sports media has shown a marked tendency to ignore accusations of rape by football players and other athletes. If Sandusky had raped young girls instead of boys, there wouldn't have been such a big outcry. I stand by what I say because I've seen it for years. You're blinded by your own prejudice if you can't see that.
Again, you're not half as upset with what may have happened to the girl as you are with me because I refuse to put jocks on a pedestal. Absolutely amazing!
Oh, yeah, I'm sure you really do care that Odin2005 and other DU members were bullied by jocks in high school. But I suspect you make a distinction in any sympathy you might have for victims of bullying. Because of your favoritism and bias, I suspect you don't have quite as much sympathy for victims of bullying when the perps have been jocks. Well, after all, Odin2005 probably was asking for it.
These crimes happen because of people like you who insist that school athletes, instead of being treated as human beings, be put on pedestals and NOT be held accountable for despicable conduct away from the game. I speak as the father of two daughters: You're not much better than a rape enabler.
