(907 posts)I have a dear friend who is a professor. He earned his degree in sociology at the university where he played football. He's a feminist who rejects machismo and has also been a critic of the dark side of school sports. (Oh, my! You mean there actually is such a thing?) He makes a distinction between "athletes" (those who enjoy playing the game, but haven't become so insufferably arrogant about it) and "jocks" (athletes who use their ludicrously high social status to abuse and harm others, such as the Steubenville thugs -- the pride and joy of that town). Recently he told me (incidentally, he hasn't played football in decades; he happens to be in his late sixties), "I am an athlete. I am NOT a jock."
I fear the thugs are going to get away with it. Now, guess what happens to guys who commit rape and get away with it. THEY RAPE AGAIN! Someone else's daughter or daughters will be traumatized for life. So much for justice! But don't mess with the football program! That's more important than people!
Incidentally, Miss Proud whatever your username is, I've put you under complete "Ignore"
(whatever it's called). (I did that after my lengthy post above in which I said I had changed my mind about not posting in any more Steubenville topics. I haven't read any of your responses to me since your last one last week.) You also won't be able to send me a PM. (What a wonderful feature!) So, go ahead and throw your worst insults at me. I won't be reading them and will never see them. You'll just be wasting your time. So, ha ha ha!
By the way, I do admire individual athletes who are decent human beings. But they didn't get that way by participating in sports, as so many incessantly claim! They brought their values to the game.
