(11,065 posts)In any criminal case the prosecutor represents the state, not the victim. Naturally, they'd advocate for the victim in order to win the state's case, but they aren't representatives of the victim in the same way that a defense attorney represents the defendant. The prosecutor for instance isn't obligated to take the wishes of the victim into account nor even inform them concerning any plea deals. I never thought this was right since it leaves victims without their own counsel unless they employ one on their own to look out for their particular interests. I always believed that prosecutors should BOTH represent the state as well as the victim. Our entire justice system is designed around protecting the accused while victims are left high and dry with no one to specifically represent their interests unless they can afford to pay for their own counsel to do so. It's an unfairly balanced system that favors the accused.
