2. Exactly why I refuse to use google!

I also use a Mac and firefox, and I have found a firefox add-on called Ghostery
INVALUABLE. I tell it to block everything in it's setting, and it does. I will frequently have "grey squares"
on web pages (where ads used to be), but that's ok with me. There a lot of things people do on their
web sites to track you besides cookies, and this seems to work really well at ridding my online life of them.
Also, I haven't had any problems getting on my online banking or anything else.
