16. The Problem With That Line, Sir

Is that social advances and benefits which can be made to seem, to white people willing to be pawns in the game, to be reducing the white privilege they know they enjoy even as they deny it exists, will become the targets of their resentment and anger, which is mobilized to attack economic and social progress. This is the essence of the voting strength of the Republican party, and has been so for nearly half a century. The key to it is the simultaneous denial white privilege exists, and anger at the specter of white privilege being diminished. This kind if double-think has to be named, and called out into the open.
