I would like any candidate to recognize that there are both (1) Democrats that advocate against the private ownership of firearms as well as (2) a significant number of Democrats who privately own firearms whether they are advocates or not.

The 2012 Democratic Platform seemed to recognize this.

Unless I'm mistaken, there is an effort being made to stampede politicans to disregard that there are firearm-owning Democrats whose views may not coincide with the views of the advocates against the private ownership of firearms.
