(31,849 posts)I went to a prep school where the median household income of students was about 200% of the regional MI. (I know this from having done a economics project). Most of the families were "Old Money" wealthy, i.e., more than 2 generation; whereas, a hand full were "New Money",i.e., their parents made the money.
From personal observation, the "Old Money" crowd were more tolerable ... they were the kids that didn't care about the status stuff, like clothes, cars, making displays of outrageous spending (though they ALL had the clothes, the cars and spent like ... well ... millionaires); whereas, the "New Money" crowd were the obnoxious group, flaunting their (parent's) money.
Being the (relatively) poor kid (both my parents were Civil Servants) ... I saw that the "New Money" kids trying to spend to fit in and the "Old Money" kids, laughing at them.
