Jane Fonda to play Nancy Reagan in "The Butler" [View all]
Former first lady Nancy Reagan isn’t worried about Jane Fonda playing her in “The Butler,” according to the actress.
"I know that she was happy that I was doing it, and I sent some questions to her that she answered,” Fonda said Sunday after receiving the Los Angeles Press Club's Visionary Award, Variety reports.
Hoping to portray Reagan accurately, Fonda reached out with questions and made changes to the film script.
"They had me doing something that wasn't very nice," the actress said. "And I said, 'if she really did this, I'll do it. But if it's made up, I don't want to do it.' I don't want to take cheap shots at her.”
Fonda, an outspoken liberal, said Reagan's friendly reaction to her casting surprised her.
“Because back when she was feisty she wasn't nice to me,” Fonda said. “We all mellow. We all mellow.”
