(74 posts)I found her "coming out" part of her speech a bit self-serving and indulgent. I am not one that believes every celebrity has to make a grand public announcement of their sexuality, but there is more to that proclamation than the sexuality of that person making it. It is about showing support and solidarity of a community of people that are denied rights by a genetic quirk. It is to say, you are not alone in this world, even someone who is a famous as me, understands what it is like to be you. What she did makes a mockery of any other person who feels like me, who feels that by announcing your sexuality you are putting a face to an aspect of humanity that would be much easier to demonize, if there were no person behind it.
I understand her respecting her privacy. I for one am very jealous of my privacy, but don't when the time is convenient, ,make a big show of saying nothing about the worst kept secret in Hollywood. She stood up there, with Mel Gibson, of all people cheering her on, tapping that damn podium, preparing to give a big show about coming out. But instead, looked down on all of the people that have taken that courageous step to stand with a community who is fighting everyday to be counted, not just as members of this society, but as human beings--by comparing their lives to reality television.
So excuse my for not heaping accolades on a fellow gay supposedly coming, when all she did was shit over all of the people who have had to make that agonizing decision before her, when it was not easy to do so.
