6. My ex-wife had an ectopic pregnancy and before that was discovered

the nurses in the emergency room treated her horribly. One nurse was trying to put an IV into her arm but kept twisting the needle around and telling us the vein was moving around. Left a painful bruise on her arm. At the time I had no idea what was going on but I distinctly recall the callousness of the nurses. My wife was in terrible pain and they made her wait what seemed like forever.

We were, however, incredibly fortunate to have a most wonderful doctor come in who diagnosed her quickly and she was in the operating room within the hour. We had no idea the danger she was in.

I never understood the behavior of those nurses until years later when I learned how fanatic people can be about abortion. They were so judgmental toward us but we had no idea at the time why. We didn't even know she was pregnant.

This all happened in the liberal capital of Boulder, Colorado, back in 1988. I can only imagine how much worse women are treated in more conservative and fundamentalist areas of the country.
