Gun Group Wants Fort Smith Laws Repealed

A pro-gun group from Arkansas has again asked Fort Smith to repeal three ordinances it says violate state law.

Two of the ordinances in question prohibit firearms in city parks while the third bans firearms from cemeteries. The group Arkansas Carry contends that all three conflict with state law.

In a letter to city officials dated Sunday, Arkansas Carry’s chairman, Steve Jones of Fort Smith, disputes a 2009 opinion from the city’s legal advisers.

“In 2009, Arkansas Carry contacted Mike Alsup, director of Parks and Recreation, informing him of the illegality of these city laws, and asked him to have the city directors repeal them,” Jones wrote. “Mr. Alsup referred the request to Wyman R. Wade, attorney representing Daily & Woods. Mr. Wade responded by letter in June 2009, informing Arkansas Carry that Arkansas law allows Fort Smith to enact firearms legislation. Arkansas Carry disagrees.”
