(53,339 posts)I had nightmares about being chased by a few hundred NVA and not being armed, but that was just part of my VN PTSD psychological effects, especially after being wounded by NVA AK fire and barely surviving.
After the war, I would have felt more comfortable having a weapon (PTSD insecurity, again), but at the same time I didn't want to own one or to have one in my house. And I never have, except for that one time.
After my best friend's pill-suicide attempt, he went into a VA in-patient PTSD program and I was asked to remove all his guns from his home. I wasn't comfortable with that, but I had to do it and to hold onto his many guns for the duration of his 6-week program and for about a month afterward. Until he asked for them, and I had to give them back to him.
Two years later, on Christmas, he put a bullet in his head...
