HOWEVER....
Because I was high risk and landed in the hospital before with 'regular' flu, when the H1N1 scare happened, I went and got a shot the first day it was available to high risk people in my province. Less than 2 days later my dd came down with H1N1. I *know* it was H1N1 because the school sent home a letter that weekend that said there had been multiple CONFIRMED cases in her school and that it was spreading fast and several kids were under observation at the local hospital. My dd was fine at 10 am and by 12 pm, 2 hours later, she had a fever of 104.5. I called our provincial health line who told me it sounded exactly like H1N1, and was told not to bring her in, unless she was gasping for air. So we stayed at home, I quarantined her from the rest of my kids and I was her caregiver. We had problems keeping her fever down, but the health line insisted we not go in to the hospital. We rode it out at home, and it was pretty scary. That was by far the sickest my dd had ever been, she was out of school for more than a week and took a month more to stop coughing. ANYHOW (sorry, rambling) I never got it. I was the only one in the room with her 24/7 and I didn't get sick. Despite only getting my shot 2 days prior. I have no doubt the immunization played a role in keeping me from getting sick. So, some immunity probably happens before the 10-14 day window is over.
