(10,777 posts)I definitely believe white males continue to enjoy significant unfair advantages in the workplace and elsewhere. And I agree that government should intervene in order to compensate for that advantage. But I believe affirmative action measures should be based primarily on economic background rather than race. This would still result in programs that primarily helped minorities, but it would alleviate some of the perceived unfairness that makes these programs vulnerable to political attack.
Of course, that approach can't work for gender issues, so I do think good old fashioned preferences should be built into the system to counteract the existing societal bias towards males. But even so, common sense must not be abandoned, as there are some jobs where one sex or the other has a distinct physical advantage.
