Then, maybe 100,000 years from now we'll take another shot at this thing called "civilization". Maybe we'll get it right next time.
We had one bottleneck event 200,000 years ago, and we're facing another. It's probably a toss-up whether the species will survive. There are those that would argue we are too wide spread to be exterminated, but what if 80% of the earth's surface becomes uninhabitable. There was a time in the distant past when only the regions north of the arctic circle could support ANY life. That could happen again.
