(44,494 posts)In her healthy days, I would take her on walks down to the Chesapeake Bay, where I would throw tennis balls to her out in the water and she would, as her name suggests, retrieve them and bring them back to me. I could do that over and over and not get tired of it, and neither did she.
Unfortunately, arthritis set in. At first it was manageable, but later on it became more and more difficult for her to walk.
Long walks, like the ones I took with her to the beach, became out the question.
I had just gotten my drivers license when her mobility declined significantly. I wanted to take her to the beach, but I knew it would have been too much for her to walk.
So one of the first drives I ever took, I put her in my back seat and drove her to the beach. And we had one last game of catch by the beach.
She passed away quietly in her sleep probably a week or two later.
But that last game of catch on the beach seemed to mean a lot to her. And it meant a lot to me, as well.
