(25,453 posts)Essentially that's the million dollar question for progressives. The Republican Party more or less represents the interests of the wealthiest 2% of the country. Maybe 5-10% of the country at most when you consider lots of people have jobs with either defense contractors, or working in the coal or oil industries, working for a health insurance company, or some other industry that is hampered by liberal attempts to change things.
So if we could just stop getting everyone to vote against their own economic interests, you'd have an overwhelming majority voting to create a social welfare state and workers' rights like they have in Europe.
The problem is that there's just no simple answer. You can try to pin it on religion, guns, racism, talk radio, Fox News, inability of Democrats to convey their message, etc. but no single explanation truly works.
