(2,140 posts)Cuts in education,made over the past 30+ years...For instance,Civics class...
When I graduated high school,in 1971,you must have taken and passed Civics,or no diploma...No way around it....When my brother went to the same school,5 years later,Civic was by then an "elective",rather than the required course it was for me...
20+ years later,as my kids were getting into high school,the same one I had attended,there was no Civics class available,period....
Over the years there have been any number of classes discontinued that taught or exercised critical thought,to the point where I'm not sure now ANY do....One minor case in point,being my oldest grandson,who while now in Middle school,has yet to be assigned reading a book,to which a report is to be written.....It's alien and cruel,to his mind, that a teacher would tell him WHAT to read,at home,and then demand a written report...I recall that process as being the norm,from the 3rd grade on.....
