All that SYG eliminates is the duty to retreat. In a state with the duty, somebody who kills an assailant and fulfills the other conditions for a valid self-defense claim can still be convicted of murder if he failed to exercise his duty to retreat. SYG removes this duty, but someone who wants to use self-defense as a defense to a murder charge must still prove the other elements of a self-defense claim. I know of no state self-defense law that would normally encompass a situation in which a person shot somebody when the other person was retreating at high speed.
