I have found out by experience that they use your email address for advertising. I have the advantage of running my own mail servers and when I register on a new site, I make up another email address just for that purpose to see if they advertise it. If the site does, then I can just delete the address. I got spam from that one. Not a lot but enough specifically geared to the subject to know it's not as private as I would like. The White house site is a good site for petitions. Maybe there are others..

Private ownership of assault weapons is for the socially twisted. Carrying assault weapons in public is a bullying, sociopathic, and uncivilized.
