"Because it fits a frame that we love. The frame of gang warfare. The frame that says our gang of Jets is smart and decent and kind and honest and their gang of Sharks is stupid and indecent (did you see the tweets about Gabrielle Giffords?) and mean and hypocritical. We love to tell the story, we love to hear the story, because it helps us to feel superior to thee."
The story told in the ad stirs up HATE against them - they are "racists" and "disgusting" and "evil".
My Oxford Desk dictionary lists synonyms for "disgust" - "loathing, contempt, hatred".
You said "It isn't her fault he called"
But it IS her fault that his call was put on the air. Somebody from her show took the call and decided "let's put this guy on the air". Further, it is her fault that his call was used in this ad. Whoever is responsible for the ad is trying to stir up that hatred against the Sharks - that gang of evil.
You think the hatred is justified, but that is what the hater ALWAYS thinks.
You think they hated first, and perhaps they did, but I agree with Martin Luther King
"The nonviolent resister would contend that in the struggle for human dignity, the opporessed people of the world must not succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter or indulging in hate campaigns. To retaliate in kind would do nothing but intensify the existence of hate in the universe." "Stride toward freedom"
