(24,876 posts)The term used by my original instructor was "Look for an out" - same thing.
It is something that should be a habit, but can be difficult to make one unless you are thinking about it regularly. I've found that these days, I almost subconsciously don't put my truck, or my car for that matter, in a position where there is no "out"
The right lane of most stretches of the interstate is perfect for this, obviously because there is generally a breakdown lane or a shoulder of some sort.
Some may think the middle lane of a 3 lane stretch of highway is just as good, but it isn't. What if the truck or the car that is the hazard is coming from the right? The right lane is always better.
I applaud you for taking such a course. I'm quite sure it has made you a better driver.
Below is a link that guys YouTube channel I mentioned. The first video that appears is the one of him getting pulled over by VA SP for the Radar Detector.

I found this guys channel about a year or so ago, looked through a few of them and then I watched this video;
If you look through the comments, you'll see several that responded to comments I made (I use "ahereticiam" on YouTube) but MY comments were deleted by NGABell ! Why? Because I called him out on his obvious inexperience! Starting at about the :15 second mark, he begins the procedure for unloading the car behind the cab. At the :56 second point, he shows that he has moved the deck the car sits on toward the trailer, but the "Flippers" he is going to use to move the car onto the trailer are set too high. I asked him why he set them so high and he told me because they flex down and that way he wouldn't damage the car. I told him he was wrong, that yeah, sure they flex, but not by 6 inches and he is risking damaging the underside as he rolled over them.
He didn't like that!
I also asked him why at the 1:10 mark, as he opens the door to get into the car why he didn't place his glove between the car door and the steel structure of the transporter to ensure he didn't scratch or damage the door as he climbed into the car.
He told me it was "So I don't get the car dirty!"
I told him no self respecting car hauler with ANY experience does it that way, that it is a hell of a lot easier to clean off a little dirt than to repair a scratch or a dent and that he clearly had a lot to learn about being a car hauler, much less a truck driver, based on this and the other videos I watched that showed his immaturity behind the wheel.
He didn't like that either!
He deleted my comments and banned me from making any more on his videos!! LOL
Some people don't like criticism! Hee hee.
So I get called a "Bitch", a "C*NT", a "fat bleeding twat" and an arrogant rat by his fans in the comments section!
Ahhhh...good times...good times!
He apparently deleted the other one I mentioned before where he hit someone because he didn't like the idea they were trying to squeeze in at the last minute in heavy traffic. Good, because he was an ass and completely at fault.
But here's a short :16 second one of him hitting a car that cut in front of him, just because he could. Titled "Take That, Bitch"
Has this happened to me?
Yup, sure has. It happens to everyone sooner or later if you drive enough miles. Hell, most people are guilty of doing something similar themselves.
Does it justify tagging the person in the rear instead of just lifting or braking a bit?
HELL NO!
Like I said, drivers like this give an entire industry a bad name. He thinks he is Billy Badass and he just ain't gonna take no shit!
Yeah? Shut the hell up, asshole, do your damned job and stop trying to scare the motoring public with your arrogance.
