Backer is starting to remind me of Jack Abramoff back in 2004-05 -- where at first he was somebody you'd never heard of and then you started to run into his name in every story about questionable right-wing operations.

But Backer is still flying under the radar. Mostly you run into a story about a PAC founded by some allegedly idealistic 23-year-old young conservative -- and it turns out that Backer is really the brains behind it. Many of Backer's groups also have some connection to the Tea Party Express, which is the most astroturf of the tea party groups.

And if he was just a scam artist, you could sit back and laugh at the people he's fleecing -- but his consistent efforts to chip away at what's left of campaign finance regulations makes him a real danger.
