It isn't crazy people most of the time. It's sane people who get really pissed off. Even if they have a right to be pissed off, they don't have a right to kill people, and without guns they wouldn't be able to.
I don't know what the answer is. I don't think banning guns is realistic. I don't think mental health checks will make any real difference because not even all mentally ill people are identified, and so many violent people aren't mentally ill. Is there any reason to believe more mentally ill people are violent than people in the general population people are?
Somehow we'd have to screen for violent tendencies to make a real difference in gun violence, but that seems unlikely.
