(13,755 posts)54. 35 tables at $8-10 a table and the fact that i don't have to tip
everyone mentioned in my initial post makes it pretty much a wash (and tips at a fine dining restaurant are closer to $18 a table at least). So saying you make $350 in a night, after you give $30 to the busser, $20 to the salad person and anywhere from $25-50 to the bartender (if they made you a fuck ton of ice cream drinks, it better be close to 50) you're down to around $275 which is about where you are at the greasy spoon. So yes, I should get tipped based on food cost because the fine dining experience is a lot more complex and the server has obligations to, for lack of a better word, support staff.
Also, those busy nights are not the rule, diners and dives have more reliably consistent business at least in my neck of the woods.

I always tip $10 regardless of the bill. Then again I always eat with just 1 other person

Ok I'll now be leaving 15% tips at all times. Whether that's $15 or $1.40. ;)

Cute how you excuse your behavior and blame others for "starting it". #rationalizinglikea3rdgrader

Bad tipping etiquette is not a pejoritive insult; it's an accurate description of what you do.

A much better than 15% tip the vast majority of the time, and slightly below 15% a tiny fraction

So 20 tables at ten dollars a table is $200. What are you complaining about?
