(47,992 posts)process & in the course of that, there is a significantly committed demographic (I'm not sure how big it is) who mistake this kind of thing for heroism in the service of principles. The point/value of that to them is exactly the degree to which it is a repudiation of how unbelievable it is to you and any others. It's reactionary contrarianism dressed up as "liberty". Have you ever dealt with anyone like that personally? The stronger your own convictions about what is right or wrong, the stronger their opposition, FOR OPPOSITION's SAKE ALONE and NONE other!
What to do? - especially when we're consider whether there is a possibility of this sort of thing becoming "writ large". I hope we are thinking about how to prevent that without armed confrontations.
I don't know specifically what to do, but I think it begins with understanding them and proceeding from there to the truth, by whatever means available and that doesn't mean that you have to agree with them, but to listen and also to be listened to.
