(71 posts)Yes. This program brought up a lot of memories and feelings. Since my brother in law died in Vietnam, we knew immediately that this
war was built on false information and was hyped up. We had already seen this movie and the Iraq War was the sequel. It was truly sickening how our "leaders" and our press jumped on it. The night of shock and awe we cried in our bed and prayed. I will never forget the bombs falling on Baghdad and that sickening feeling that all hell had been let loose.
Rachel Maddow has done a great service to this country to remind everyone of what can happen when a few crazies hijack our elections and our govt. while others let it happen. It was very affirming of my values that this program was aired by a mainstream cable channel.
She really let Bill Keller, NY Times Editor, off the hook, though. His reporters Judith Miller and Michael Gordon lied in The Times and pumped up the case for war. Judith Miller has since been discredited as a reporter, but Michael Gordon keeps his job. He is still lying for The Times. Bill Keller knows Judith well, since the Kellers would summer with her. As a result, we complained bitterly when Judith was invited to speak at our daughter's school for graduation. And we will never, ever subscribe to the Times again.
The really important thing here is that this lied into war was the most morally sickening thing I can remember witnessing personally.
Some of our friends immigrated to Canada after the war started and I yearned to leave with them, but my family did not want to leave.
The deaths of so many innocent Iraqis and so many of our own is a tragedy. It is a tragedy too that many young people have been lured into the military and it has even become sort of admired. I pity them too.
In this household we did our time, a decade in the anti war movement and still at it. It has been a lot of hard work. It was the only moral choice we could make. Otherwise how could I face myself? I pray that people wake up before we are drawn into a war with Iran.
Believe me, there are forces in this country that are trying hard to make it happen. I hope everyone reading this will become active again to resist future wars. Many say, why be active, it didn't work before, but just do it for yourself, for your integrity and self respect. Join us!
