86. Consider ornamental grass

We use something called oriental feather grass as a screen between our house and the road. In the spring, it quickly grows into a dense hedge and it puts out tall seed stalks in the fall. In November, we cut it down with hedge clippers and dump it on the compost pile. Next spring, it grows up again. It does seed itself into the lawn, but is easily kept in line with a lawn mower.

Best of all, we started the whole hedge from about $5.00 worth of seed.
