So, I said that the movies are an art form, but certainly they're not all High Art.

I would submit that the best movies, including some of the nominees for best picture this year--Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Life of Pi--find it possible to get made without gratuitous nudity, and the Oscars still try to salute the best that movies are capable of. The best movies can teach, inspire, inform and inspirit people *as well as* entertaining them.

And that's why I think this comedic strategy failed--it was performed in front of plenty of people who are working at the high end of the form, while aiming at the lower end of the form. It's just not clear who the butt, you should excuse the expression, of the joke was. Confusion reigned in my brain.
