Dogs don't run away unless they're being mistreated.

Don't get me wrong. Our dog will go zoomies pell mell into traffic if allowed off-leash. (This is a problem we are having remedied with owner training classes). At the bark park he goes crazy. And then he comes and quietly sits with us. We don't even have to call him. After his run, he wants to be with his pack. Were he to escape our yard somehow, I have no doubt that he'd eventually come back once his curiosity and smell-needs had been satisfied. Note: I'm not testing this theory, but I'm pretty sure.

Dogs don't run away. They know where the food, the shelter, and the pack is. A dog will prefer his familiar environment if it offers even a small measure of comfort and security.

If a dog truly runs away, you can be sure that his treatment has been well-nigh unbearable and he would rather take his chances than allow it to continue.
