I find numerous references to this with expressions of disbelief. But the majority of the criticisms have been short and muted, as far as I've read. Many of the news reports recall the exchange, but don't seem to presume to know how to address it. There's certainly room for Wedel to claim that she was just making an innocent and innocuous joke; especially since the Prez let her off of the hook with his skillful directing of the conversation.

I really think that most folks are clueless about the origins of the phrase as it relates to blacks. Many are thinking of an Irish dance.

I would, however, agree that it should be clear that her questioning fell along the lines of those in the Tea Party and elsewhere in the conservative crowd that there's something about our immigration policies which is holding them back from finding work. Supposedly, 'foreigners' are getting jobs ahead of them, by some government design. It's a familiar argument of the republican opposition which, I'm sure, the President recognized on its face. That's why I believe he offered to take her husband's resume; to make clear that her complaint was a wrongheaded notion which could be easily refuted.
