A dollar of interest payment in 2053 is a 2053 dollar. That is smaller than a 2003 dollar... by a lot.
If someone gave the total nominal cost of a house with a mortgage the total is shocking. Now, if someone claimed that the nominal total of all payments is what is really paid for the house they would be advancing an agenda, not trying to give an accurate picture of cost, because interest in the future is paid with devalued dollars.
$2 Trillion is plenty to be upset about. That is a great sum of money.
And, unlike $6 trillion, the figure does not demand to be dismissed or suggest that the speaker is running some spin, rather than trying to provide the most honest view of something.
When you are on the right side, be scrupulously honest. Gilding the lilly never helps.
