12. It became the number one issue when the right-wing started amending Constitutions

When ballot initiatives to ban gay marriage started to be pushed across the nation the inequality and hate became obvious to many millions of Americans. It was not the gay rights movement that made this the number one issue, it was the religious right that made it the number one issue. What the gay rights movement did is they fought against the inequality and bigotry that was being pushed and when they fought back they turned public opinion to their side. The gay rights movement deserves major props for their coming victory in the long struggle for equality, the bigots who oppose marriage equality can go straight to hell.
