In reply to the discussion: President Obama will formally propose cuts to Social Security and Medicare [View all]kenny blankenship
(15,689 posts)Honestly folks, how can you have missed the four years of Obama trying to do a deal with Republicans to cut the Safety Net? He has alluded to his attempts -plural attempts, not singular- to get a deal cutting Social benefits in exchange for tax increases on numerous occasions. He even pushed for this during the depths of the Great Financial Crisis.
People just didn't want to believe the news? Fingers stuck in ears? Heads up rears?
The Republicans haven't wanted an agreement with him on anything, not unless it comes in the form of them laying down an ultimatum and him conceding to it in a public show of humiliation and abasement. (The content of ANY legislation for Republicans is a distant second in importance to the capitulating FORM which the agreement takes - because their base is so ignorant and enraged.) Republican intransigence is the ONLY REASON why you haven't seen a deal cutting the safety net already. Don't count on your Democrats blocking anything. Only a minority of the PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS would sign a letter rejecting cuts to the safety net. Oh yeah, you're all fucked cross-eyed and speechless, if rescue depends on the Democrats.
Go ahead and call your Democratic Representatives and Senators. But don't forget to pray to God(s) the Republicans stay savage and intransigent. The latter course is your best hope.
