During the 2008 campaign, he pledged to "strengthen" Social Security, to make sure that it would be there for future generations.

I don't think anyone paid enough attention then to ask him what the hell he meant. Now we know. Or maybe we were just too in love to care.

This is an interview he gave a few days before his first inauguration.

Usually, people don't refer to "kicking the can down the road" when they talk about things most voters are going to love, like truly strengthening Social Social Security--you know, without the 1984 doublespeak twist where "strengthening Social Security" really means kicking it in the groin.
