2. Why did I know the rabbi was going to be Messianic?

Messianic Jews follow the rituals of Judaism but believe the Messiah has already come -- Jesus. Not quite the same as Jews for Jesus.

Traditional Jews of all stripes don't have a whole lot of respect for them. Neither, as it happens, do I: I once worked at an agency whose board chair was a Messianic Jew. Our relationship was, shall we say, fraught. I figured the one day I wouldn't have to deal with him was Yom Kippur.

Sure enough, there he was, big as life, on Yom Kippur. He said he had something that "had" to be done that day. Puh-leeze! Even the IDF soldiers need a special abbinical dispensation in order to protect Israel from a repeat of the Six-Day War.
