Some Cortez residents may have been surprised to find a stream of orange water coming out of their faucets on Thursday.

The city flushes water that comes in from the water treatment plant every spring. The flushing can stir the water up and create a layer of biofilm, which causes the water to change color, said Don Royce, with the city's Public Works Department.

The biofilm is harmless, Royce said, and should settle down this morning. Only a few places in the city saw the orange water, including on Main Street, East Second Street and South Valley Road, as well as the area near City Park.http://www.cortezjournal.com/article/20130404/NEWS01/130409900/-1/News01/City's-orange-water-is--off-color-but-not-unsafe

I'm not saying their water supply doesn't suck, but there could be a reasonable explanation, too.
