The shockwaves and/or radiation bursts from a supernova can do some real damage from that distance. It would take at least 1300 years to get here but if it goes supernova in 2012, we should be setting our DEADline to GTFO off this planet at 1300 years hence and every year after that is bonus time.

Hale Bopp was one of those once in a lifetimes....also the Leonids back in 2000.

When Hale-Bopp as visible over San Francisco, we also had a lunar eclipse.

Betelgeuse is actually closer to us, current best estimate is 700 light years or so..
