(65,929 posts)Having lived through the more glamorous part of L.A.'s history: earthquakes, floods, riots, and mudslides, I can completely agree that there is no way in hell anyone one person could ever hoped to be prepared for everything.
back in '08 when oil was surging in price there were tons of people here were I work asking me about gardening. (I have a fairly big garden), now? not a soul. I still garden.
simple rule of thumb if ever, god forbid, there is a general emergency and you need to survive: get to know your neighbors.
get friendly with them, have them over, share things, bring over extra produce from the garden, build a communal bond.
That will help anyone survive.
I live in tornado country and I do have a bug out bag for my gf and I but more importantly, I know my neighbors and help them out when I can and they they same in return.
It's all about community.
