It doesnt lead to a perfect country or world, but the alternative is worse.
Sometimes when I think about the confederates in the Civil War, my more base impulse is to wish that Lincoln or Union Generals had hung every rebel leader and military officer, as well as sympathizers. There would have been lots of blood, but I am not sure that killing that many people would have led to a better country.
I am an African American, born and raised southerner. I was too young to remember separate drinking fountains, but the schools in my state did not integrate until something like 1971 and only after a federal Judge had given the state an ultimatum, and even then officials dragged their feet. So I have a sense of what White recalcitrance looks like and believe me, the Capitol riot on Jan 6 was White recalcitrance to change personified. But I also know that a young Black woman is one of the lead architects of one of the vaccines that are in use here and worldwide. I know that I have no resistance to my business and that the business of a business owning brother relies almost exclusively on White customers for profitability. So our past has had a lot of darkness in it, but I believe that there are somethings from that past that we can correct, but there comes a point when we must look to the future and hold people accountable for anti-social acts. I believe that President Biden realizes that we will survive our future only if we are united, so he seems to be spending calories to make that happen, and I believe that is a worthwhile goal.
